Design Statement:
The digitalisation of the world and the fast-paced way of life of Singaporeans have been the cause of people having lesser chances to interact within their communities and groups. Through my design, I hope to create a reading club and garden playspace that serves the Sembawang community around the car park as a space for people to reignite interactions and communicate physically with each other after a long break due to the Covid lifestyle of digitising all communications.
I hope to achieve this by making the space using contrasting design languages to show that it is a space separate from the monotonous forms of life and design in the surrounding area.
PROJECT INFO
In this project, we were tasked to redesign an existing Multistorey Carpark in Sembawang leaving about 30% of the building to be used as a carpark and the rest of the building to be redesigned for community use. Our main objective was to redesign it in such a way that everyone in the community can use it and find the space enjoyable. Certain constraints were the fact that the carpark was surrounded by HDB Blocks on all sides, thus we had to design it such that the privacy of the residents was not compromised. My approach to this project was to create a space that promoted multi-generational bonding amongst the community and develop the site into a space that allowed for the community to interact with each other.
